British Values

At St. Mary’s Church of England School, and in accordance with the Department for Education requirements, we aim to actively promote British Values in schools to ensure young people leave school prepared for life in modern Britain.

British Values are introduced, discussed and lived out through our values of Hope, Reverence, Service and Compassion. Our curriculum also provides opportunities to promote these values through learning in RE, PSHE and other units in the broader curriculum. There are also times when we specifically learn about each of the British Values, often through our daily act of worship or British Values week.

The school actively promotes the need to treat all people with respect and tolerance and understand that while different people may hold different views about what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, all people living in England are subject to its laws.

The British Values are:

  • Democracy
  • The rule of law
  • Individual liberty
  • Mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs and for those without faith.
